Cats and Hipscarves…

Stitchers often have cats as stitching buddies. This seems to be a given. If the stitcher is also a dancer, this provides even more opportunity for hilarity – and cat-astrophe, as bellydance costumes (and practice clothes) have a multitude of dangly bits.

Until recently, I have been very lucky with my cats. Rhys, big, black, slinky panther that he was, was also a coward, and had no interest in coming anywhere NEAR the jingly monsters that live in my closet and dance bag. Dora, for all her exploring, really was never interested in helping me stitch or in playing with my dance things…
Enter Millie. In August 2015 she appeared on our doorstep, a starving, coughing little ball of fluff with an eye infection so bad I wasn’t sure she would recover her sight. As I write this, she is not only completely healthy, but tearing up the floor as she barrels around at top speed. This is definitely a high-energy kitten!

When I stitch, she wants to help – and help to her includes chasing the needle as it goes through the fabric, or batting beads across the table and then the floor.

MillieScarves1And she LOVES hipscarves and beaded costumes. The scarves make an even better sound than crinkly bags and her crinkle tunnel. And beaded fringe is just one more thing to love and chase, no?
But the Best Thing Ever(TM) is when I put on the jingly or dangly-fringe belt to practice.Have you ever had a large kitten hang from your butt while you try to do a hip snap? No? Well you are definitely missing out. I don’t really recommend it. Those little claws she uses as pitons for her climbing expeditions are SHARP!

  1. Oh, no. I can only imagine your trouble with your kitty and hip scarves. I used to take belly dancing classes (the classes changed to a time I can’t go), but now I belly dance at home with a DVD. Since I like it, I bought my own hip scarves, which the class no longer provided. My Yorkie decided that the little bells and noisy things must be enemies. He jumps and bites at my hip scarves. He occasionally gets my butt, of course. I understand completely! LOL Luckily, he’s starting to understand that he can’t do that. He gets treats when he stops jumping on me. Happy dancing!
